Selling a Car in Vancouver

Vancouver is the hardest place in the Lower Mainland to sell a car privately, and it comes down to space. If you live in a West End tower or a Mount Pleasant walk-up, you are likely paying for a stall you no longer want, and you have nowhere to let strangers test drive from. Residential permit zones in Kitsilano, Fairview and the West End make it awkward to leave a vehicle parked with a For Sale sign for weeks on end.

That is the situation we are built for. We come to your building, your street, or your workplace anywhere from Point Grey to Hastings-Sunrise, look at the car once, and pay you on the spot. There is no listing to write, no test drives with strangers, and no back-and-forth over a car that has been sitting unused since you started taking the SkyTrain.

Underground and tandem parking

Low-clearance strata garages are routine here. Tell us the stall is underground and we bring equipment that fits. If the car does not run and is boxed in, let us know the layout and we will plan the lift rather than turning up and failing.

Permit-zone and towed vehicles

If your car has accumulated tickets or has already been towed to a City impound, we can still buy it. You will need to settle what is owed to release the vehicle, but we will factor a realistic offer around it rather than walking away.

Downtown timing

For Downtown, Yaletown and Coal Harbour pickups we schedule outside peak hours where we can. Loading a vehicle onto a deck truck on a downtown street at 5pm helps nobody, so mornings and mid-afternoons usually work best.

Three steps

Quote, accept, paid.

No listing to write, no test drives with strangers, no waiting on a cheque to clear.

STEP 01

Tell us what you have

Year, make, model, rough mileage, and an honest word on condition. Photos help for anything with damage, rust, or awkward access — a steep driveway or an underground parkade is worth mentioning now rather than on the day.

STEP 02

Get a real number

One figure, no obligation, and it is the figure you get paid. We price rust, high mileage and non-runners at the quoting stage rather than discovering them on your driveway and renegotiating.

STEP 03

We collect, you get cash

We come to Vancouver, look the vehicle over, and hand you the cash before it goes on the truck. You sign the ICBC Transfer/Tax Form, keep your plates, and that is the whole process.

What we buy

Every rung of the ladder.

Condition changes the number, never whether we are interested in a vehicle in Vancouver. Do not spend money on repairs to improve an offer — you will rarely get it back.

Clean, well-kept car in excellent condition

ExcellentTop value

Low mileage, clean body, full service history. Often garaged second cars that were barely driven.

Car in good working condition with normal wear

Good

Drives well, normal wear for its age. The everyday commuter that has simply been replaced.

Car needing mechanical repair work

Fair

Runs, but needs work. Failed inspections, tired brakes, a slipping transmission, warning lights on.

Car with collision damage and body panel dents

Poor

Body damage, heavy corrosion, or a repair bill well past what the car is worth to fix.

Non-running car with the hood up being loaded for towing

Not runningStill buying

Seized brakes, dead battery, flat-spotted tires, parked since 2015. We bring the winch and the deck truck.

Uninsured vehicle being collected by a flat deck tow truck

Uninsured & off the road

Lapsed insurance does not stop a sale. It is exactly why we come to you rather than asking you to drive it over.

The paperwork, in plain words.

  • APV9T

The ICBC Transfer/Tax Form. You sign it at collection, alongside your registration and matching photo ID.

  • PLATES

In BC your plates stay with you, never with the car. Take them off before we load it.

  • REFUND

Bring the plates and your signed copy to any Autoplan broker to cancel insurance and claim what you are owed.

  • LIEN

Money still owed against the vehicle has to be cleared first — ownership cannot transfer cleanly until it is.

  • NO TEST

AirCare ended in 2014. There is no inspection certificate to get before a private sale.

Local questions

Selling a car in Vancouver

Can you pick up a car from an underground parkade in Vancouver?

Yes. Most Vancouver condo buildings have low-clearance underground parkades, so we use equipment sized for them. Tell us when you book that the car is underground, roughly how tight the ramp is, and whether the vehicle rolls and steers. If it does, we can usually winch it up to street level and load from there. If it is completely seized, we will tell you honestly before we come out rather than wasting your afternoon.

Do I need to be there when you collect the car in Vancouver?

Someone authorised to sell the vehicle and sign the transfer form needs to be present, because we pay at collection and you sign the paperwork at the same time. That does not have to be at your home. Plenty of Vancouver customers have us meet them at their office in Downtown or on Broadway during a lunch break, which is often easier than coordinating a building fob and a parkade.

What happens to my parking stall and my insurance after I sell?

Those are two separate jobs and only one of them is ours. Once the sale is done you keep your licence plates — in BC plates stay with the seller, not the car — and you take them with your signed transfer paperwork to any Autoplan broker to cancel the insurance and claim any refund you are owed. Your parking stall is between you and your strata or landlord, but a fair number of our Vancouver customers are selling precisely so they can give the stall up.

Is it worth selling an old car in Vancouver rather than just keeping it parked?

Do the arithmetic on what the car actually costs you while it sits. A paid strata stall, basic insurance you are keeping in force so the vehicle stays legally parked, and the repair bill you are putting off can quietly run to a meaningful sum each year for a car you are not driving. If the vehicle is not earning its keep, converting it to cash today is usually the better call — and the longer a non-running car sits, the less it is worth.
